Lost Puppy [13 Jun 2007|10:10am]

blathering
Sienna discovered a lost puppy this morning. He appears to be a purebred husky; he still has his milk teeth and was dragging a retractable leash. We found him near Napoleon between St. Charles and Freret.

We're going to have him checked for a chip later this morning.

Tails from the green side (X-post from personal LJ) [26 May 2007|01:27pm]

micahra
Well, it's been a couple weeks since I built King Mosh's Iguana Loft, and he is a new Iguana. I could tell that he just wasn't settling into the new apartment before, now he's in good spirits. He had been super cranky, but this morning when he came down and wasn't interested in eating, I picked him up to take him to the tub to do his bidness. He didn't resist the pickup or trip over, or back. He even looks cheerful now. Well, as cheerful as an iguana can look. He's grown quite a bit since he was brought to me in the summer of '05. He was 26" then, 32" last year, and measures in at about 38" now. That's nose to tailtip, not the proper way to measure, but the more impressive way ><

And what's a pet post without pics?

Lost Dog!! Please Help [12 May 2007|02:16am]

belialsgate
[ mood | depressed ]

My little Voodoo, my baby, got out of my gate and is gone. We think that someone probably picked him up, most likely on Frenchman St. by either Benders or Wasabi. If you see him, PLEASE get in touch with me. He is VERY missed by everyone here, including Rere, who is his doggy friend.
Voodoo is VERY sweet and might have went up to someone in hopes of getting help getting home, he trusts everyone.
He is a small Yorkie mix with weird blond fur that dredlocks. He has big brown eyes. He had on a purple collar with a tag, but the tag has the wrong address due to a recent move, (why he would have needed help getting home.) He looks a mess, but it is because he has a severe fear of clippers and scissors, not because of neglect. He is spoiled and is not a big fan of dog food, so he might not be eating. He also he separation anxiety so if you try to leave a house that he is in he barks and runs after you.
Voodoo has been part of our family for 5 years. He came from an abusive family before us, (hence the grooming and food hang ups) and IS part of the family, not just a pet. He survived Katrina with us, was part of the reason we refused to leave New Orleans, and is REALLY missed. There is a reward!!!!!!!
Please reunite this puppy with his mommy and his family.

Call:
504-813-2781 or 908-220-0373 or 504-528-5435 ANYTIME, day/night with any information.
Or, drop by dba, The John, Iggys, or Razoos. They know how to get in touch with me. There are also fliers posted all over the Marigny.

Thank you all.

Volunteer Opportunities with LA-SPCA [04 Jan 2007|02:36pm]

theredpanther
Foster Care:
The LA-SPCA is in the process of revamping their Foster Care Program. If you have fostered before or are interested in fostering please contact them. All Foster Care "parents" are required to attend a Volunteer Orientation and must be approved to be a Foster Parent. Fostering is a wonderfully rewarding job and a very
difficult and time consuming one at the same time. It is not always fostering kittens and puppies. It could be an adult dog or cat with special needs, or the puppies or kittens may need to be bottle fed around the clock.
Interested? Contact: ginger@la-spca.org or 368-5191, ext 142.

Care Cadet:
Care Cadet Camp applications are now available. Children entering either 6th or 7th grade in fall 2007 are eligible for the three-week training camp held from June 11-29. To request an application, please drop by 701 Thayer St. (corner of Opelousas Ave. in Algiers), or send your mailing address to lori@la-spca.org or call 368-5191, ext.
154.

Can't make it down to the shelter but still want to help? Help spread the news:
Print, post, distribute and/or e-mail various event flyers, adoptable pet flyers, obedience class info, etc.
Print and post at your favorite shops, office, groomer, vet, etc., print and distribute at the dog levee, parks and/or forward to your e-mail address book.
High quality, color, printer required. Two-three flyers per month; you can select the ones you're interested in. Contact: Lori Haeuser at lori@la-spca.org

Want to stay at home and help? MySpace it!
Are you familiar with the SPCA MySpace page? If not, here it is: http://www.myspace.com/laspca
They are looking for someone who enjoys being online to monitor the account and "make Friends" with other animal loving individuals and groups. Time investment would be, minimum, several hours a week.
If you are interested please contact Shelly@la-spca.org for details.

Rooster and Isabella, heading to New Orleans... [27 Nov 2006|11:56am]

cutiepie74
I wanted to introduce my babies, who will be going back to New Orleans with me at the end of the week. They haven't been to the city since December, 2004. They are both rescue dogs. I've had Isabella since February, 2002, when she was approximately 2 months old. I've had Rooster since September, 2003, when he was approximately a year old.

Isabella, of course, is a prima donna, an attention whore and so completely spoiled. She is so much like me, it is ridiculous. Don't let the cute pictures fool you :P I usually call her Stinker-bella because she is so rotten. We do have a very special bond, though. She was my contract to myself to stay alive after my best friend in Austin was murdered (November 23, 2001). She and I have been through a lot together, including an abusive relationship that ended in a protective order. I must've apologized to her a million times that night.

Rooster is still semi-feral. He was dumped in the woods with his siblings and spent the first two months of his life in the wild. He has come a long way and is the sweetest dog ever. However, my friend says he has a Sybil side to him. But, it's always been for show and he's never harmed anything in his life. I think that's how he survived in the woods, but I constantly have to monitor for bikes, motorcycles, trucks that sound like motorcycles. He gives me a workout when we're out on our walks. The ladies at his foster house told me that even their ferrets bullied him. He was in his foster house for 5-6 months, before I adopted him, and he was the pet with them the longest. I honestly believe that Rooster has the soul of an angel and I believe he has paid his debt to the universe. On the plus side, most guys are afraid to walk past me when I'm out with Rooster.

Taking them back with me is going to be a big step for me. I've been so nervous about the city, the trash and the gunfire, especially off Elysian Fields. But, I did find a vet that I really like, out in Covington. I used to work with him at the Animal Emergency Center from 1998-1999. His name is Dr. Gregory Labranche and I highly recommend him. To me, he's worth the drive. If he could be my people doctor, I would so hire him.

Well, take care and thanks for letting me say "hi."

Disinfecting for ringworms. [27 Nov 2006|11:35am]

cutiepie74
Minnie is the newest addition to my family, as of November 7th. It is confirmed that she has ringworm and the doctor is prescribing an oral medication since it covers a lot of her body now. Minnie was 7 ounces and is now 1 3/4 lbs.

I researched ringworm on the internet and noted some disinfecting suggestions. The doctor was surprised that I haven't caught ringworm from Minnie, nor has anyone else who has been in contact with her. She has been sleeping on my neck and chest (literally) for the past month. Of course, I've been kissing her as well. I'm at my apartment in Austin for the week and have started a full disinfection regime, including adding bleach to all of my laundry and spraying Lysol all over the carpets, doors, mattresses, etc. Lysol is the only spray I have on hand and it does kill the fungus, which causes Athlete's Foot. However, I did read that the fungus common is kittens has a different name.

I also read that ringworm can live in an environment for up to 18 months. I have two dogs as well, but they've had minimal contact with Minnie. Does anyone have suggestions for maintaining a ringworm-free environment? I told my mom to spray my room in New Orleans with a bleach/water solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water).

I am such a germ freak and do not want to risk infecting any of my friends and pets.

Thanks...here are a couple of pictures of my newest little nut :)

Kitten advice [08 Nov 2006|09:06am]

cutiepie74
Yesterday, the students at Einstein Charter in New Orleans East found a little kitten wandering around. I tried looking for other kittens or a mama cat, but had no luck. The kitten is extremely young, but does know how to suckle. My mom bought kitten formula and I've been syringe feeding the kitten, who I've named Minnie. Minnie has been sleeping a lot and taking formula at regular intervals. After feedings, I wipe her abdomen and tail area with a warm wash cloth. Years ago, my mom heard that helps stimulate bowel movements. I'm not sure if this is urban legend or not...as far as I can tell Minnie hasn't urinated or defacated. I've tried putting her in the grass for a few minutes and we've also put a small litter pan next to her bed.

Can someone please tell me if we need to do something else to assist her going to the restroom? I've never really taken care of a kitten this young before.

Thanks!!
mel.

[ mood | worried ]

I found a medium-to-largish dog running loose around the uptown area about 2pm yesterday. She has a pink collar and answers to the name Peggy Sue. The phone number on the collar has yet to answer.
I've tried walking her to see if she knows her way home, but she's clearly clueless; I think she's still a bit of a pup. If any of you know anything--if this is a neighbor's dog or something, please let me know. She seems very lonely for her person.

I don't live in NOLA, but I subscribed to this community because I volunteered up at Tylertown last December. While there, I fell head over heels for a little kitten who'd been rescued from the Gentilly neighborhood. I ended up adopting her. She is almost a year old and is thriving. The joy she's added to my life is indescribable.

Anyway, thought you'd like to see a Katrina animal story with a happy ending. I just wish I could have saved them all.

In search of help [27 Jul 2006|06:04pm]

goddessmusings
[ mood | frustrated ]

Hi, I'm a New Orleanian in search of some advice or help regarding animal abuse/neglect. There is a puppy  that is owned by some people living in a FEMA trailer behind my office in La Place. She is in bad shape. Feel free to check out my posts on it here
With photos
More photos

We have contacted a lot of various organizations and the local police with no luck. It seems the cops have been out there a couple of times and the owners claim that she's being treated for the mange and is seeing a vet regularly. That still does not excuse them leaving her in a metal cage exposed to the sun and heat for hours on end. She's being abused, I don't care what the local rescue place claims. I am suspect of their claims of having gone to actually see the dog given that it has taken us days to get in touch with a human being.
Does anyone here know of any rescue groups other than the SPCA or the Humane Society that I could try? Part of the problem is that no one wants to go out to La Place to help. My co-worker and I have been trying to get her help and we are desperate. We can raise some funds for her care once we can get her out of there. Being that we work there, we are hesitant to just toss her in our cars and leave in the middle of the day.

Any help or ideas at all would be greatly appreciated.

The RIG is in town! [22 Jul 2006|10:47am]

love2loveher
Be a responsible pet owner - Spay or Neuter your pet!
Right now the "Big Fix Rig" is in town, and they (if I am reading this correctly) they will spay and neuter for $10. That's a great deal!

http://www.la-spca.org/dedication/events/fix_rig.htm

The group that runs the rig is The Humane Alliance from Asheville NC. I've spent a day at their home office in Asheville watching them do their magic and can assure you that your dog or cat is in good hands. Don't be afraid because it is a low-cost deal, it is low cost because of the grants and the people working there will take great care of your pet.

So if you have been putting off spaying or neutering your animal, NOW IS THE TIME!

and a less important issue, I should introduce myself!Collapse )

Recycling option: Helping the planet AND the animals... [18 Jul 2006|03:38pm]

The LA-SPCA will gladly take your newspaper for lining the cat cages.
From the volunteer coordinator:
"We don't want the slicks or the comics. We just need the newspapers and if they can come already open and just folded in half that would be even better."

LA-SPCA is now located in Algiers (right near Algiers Point) at 701 Thayer Street.

P.S. Here's their wish list, too. You know, if you're going over there anyway... :)

Come early because when the meat is gone, we're done!!

The food will be FREE, but we are asking for donations to build an ark of a care package for Louisiana Soldiers in Iraq. Regardless of whether you support the war or not, those soldier boys could use a little homegrown love. :)

[22 Jun 2006|01:54am]

puppetoflove
Hi, I'm Regina. I live closer to Baton Rouge than NO, but I'm a sucker for animals so I'm here anyway. Currently we have three dogs and 18 cats, though the number of cats can change from day to day, seeing as the majority of them are outside cats and feral cats who wandered up for food and never left. We get all our animals spayed and neutered, even the feral ones, but we have neighbors who are the definition of irresponsible pet owners so we sometimes end up with litters of kittens here and there. Now I'm going to post about eleventy billion pictures of said animals, so click at your own risk.Collapse )

Lastly, if anyone has a Dogster or Catster account, feel free to friend any or all: Nibbler, Lucky, Charity, Bobert, Bubba, and Kittle.

I recommend signing up in any case, it's free and fun and a great place to find rescue dogs or find a home for your rescue dog.
